The village name derives from Wald und Berg (forest and mountain) was then "Waldenberc", then in1275 "Waldenberg", in 1330 "Waldemberch" and since the 15th century Waldenburg.

A castle settlement developed, which probably got its town charter in the 13th century, is being named town for the first time in 1330. It lies with the castle at the foothills of the Waldenburger Berge around 150m above the surrounding Hohenlohe Lowlands. The medieval townscape has been preserved.
Beyond the wall ring one enjoys the view onto fertile countryside, golden corn fields, grazing cattle and idyllic hamlets all the way to the Odenwald andthe Franken Height.

"Oh homeland, we are all yours,
how far and foreign we go;
you looked into our blood
already in child's sleep.

No way is that we asked
for the way home;
who got lost will be brought
to you in dreams."

The town's fortification ring wall, entrenchment and bastion
"Like a shield lies the city wall around the castle and settlement."
The mountain with its steep slopes is the natural fortification, used by master builders, further used tomake the castle look like grown from earth crowned with castle.

The entrenchment lies with more than 8 metres shield wall as mighty barrierprotective in front of the barbican and castle settlement. It blocks here, with only a width of 31metres the in-saddled spit off. Amidst the entrenchment at the northern exit of the 3,50metres gate vault strengthened a flanking fortified tower the defence. At the basement in large rooms varied defence items and stockpiles of any kind are being stored.

Before 1500 the first fights during the siege of the fortification were held just outside the walls and gates of the castle but with the introduction of firearms and mines the enemy needed to be kept from the castle as it all possible. These wasthe task of the bastion. It is detached and built outside the ring wall so that it is able to defenceactionsin all directions. The gun barrels at the three strong round towers were directed towards the north, west and south. A protected connection path leads to the main castle. This especially strong facility indicates how important the bastion was and how highly the danger for the fortification was rated, coming from the lowlands.

Gates and towers - high watchman tower and entrenchment tower

"Lachners' tower trusted companion" Of all the fortifications witnesses you are my favourite!
No other braved the storms and times like you.
You protected the barbican and castle like a straight knight's shield. Because of you the fist law lost its courage to storm you.
You were the town's guard for nearly seven centuries; you are its landmark and memorial."
